Description: Did you know that Ontario Hydro, the predecessor to Hydro One, was the world’s first publicly owned utility? It was 1905 when Ontario decided that electricity was a vital resource that should be owned by the people, with profits put to use for the public good. Today it’s a system that generates nearly a billion dollars a year for Ontario schools, roads and hospitals. But after more than a century of public investment in our electricity system, the Ontario government are about to hand it over to the private sector. No one voted to sell-off Ontario’s public utilities.
