More about WEN-DO WOMEN’S SELF DEFENCE

What is Wen-Do?
Wen-Do is the oldest women’s self defence organization in Canada. Our programs have been recommended by the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre/Multicultural Women Against Rape, Toronto Police, and the University of Toronto Community Safety Office, among many others, and have been taught for schools, unions, community centers, and women’s organizations across Ontario. Classes are small, safe, non-competitive, and fun!

What will we learn in a Wen-Do course?
You’ll learn simple physical self-defence techniques, designed to be effective even against someone bigger and stronger than you, including: blocks, hits, and kicks; how to get out of body holds, arm holds, and chokes; things we can do if the attacker has a weapon, or if there is more than one attacker We’ll explore verbal self defence – skills for calming, reasoning, distracting, surprising or confronting an attacker, depending on the situation. We’ll discuss issues of violence against women and girls – why it happens, what we can do about it, and strategies for recognizing and getting out of threatening situations. And we’ll share inspiring real-life stories of resistance! Learn about the many creative and resourceful ways that girls and women have protected themselves from assault. (Ask your instructors to tell you the story about the woman who barked, or the 112-year-old woman in Detroit who sent her assailant running, or the five-year-old girl who knocked her attacker unconscious.)

Do I need to be physically fit to take Wen-Do?
Absolutely not! Women and girls of all shapes, sizes, fitness levels, and ages (10 and up) have taken Wen-Do and loved it. If you can’t do a particular technique because of a physical limitation, the instructor will work with you to figure out alternatives. The course includes a balance of physical techniques and discussions, and you can take a break whenever you need to.
