Joanna Tuffy was a Labour Party TD in the Dáil Éireann from 2007 to 2016. Labour has been in many coalition governments, most recently from 2011 to 2016. Ireland uses PR-STV (Single Transferable Vote) one of the three systems recommended to the Electoral Reform Committee by Fair Vote Canada. BC-STV received 58% of the vote in the first BC referendum in 2005.
Steve Withers is a joint citizen of New Zealand and Canada. He moved from Canada to NZ in 1982. He was a leader in the NZ yes to MMP (Mixed Member Proportional) campaign in 1996 and campaigned for MMP in Ontario in 2007. MMP is one of the three systems recommended to the Electoral Reform Committee by Fair Vote Canada. MMP won a majority of the vote in the PEI referendum in 2016.
We may have another special guest joining us, too – check the fairvote.ca website for updates…
It’s an exciting week for the electoral reform movement in Canada!
By the end of this week, we should know the final seat count in British Columbia and whether the BC NDP and BC Green party are prepared to form a stable government committed to delivering proportional representation!
On Wednesday, May 31, there will be a FREE VOTE in the House of Commons on whether to concur with the recommendations of the all-party committee on electoral reform. With the votes of just 20 Liberal MPs, it could pass, sending a strong signal to the government that the majority of MPs want the promise to make every vote count back on the table for 2019!
