The idea that activists need to incorporate security into their organizing can feel scary, and often when we encounter attempts at developing a security culture, they feel alienating or exclusive. However, it’s also true that we live in an age of increasing political repression, and the state may seek to disrupt our organizing whether or not we’re even doing anything illegal.
This workshop seeks to develop a vision for an activist security culture rooted in building trust, deepening connections, pushing our edges, and building confidence. It will introduce some basic principles of what this security culture might look like, discuss some of the ways that the Canadian state has been targeting social and environmental justice activists in the past five years, and work to develop sets of security culture practices that can make participants’ organizing safer and more effective.

Facilitator: Peter Hopperton was one of 19 people targeted with conspiracy charges after the 2010 mobilizations against the G20 in Toronto. He lives in Hamilton.
