Description: This workshop will explore the meaning of food sovereignty in the context of turtle island. Using anti-oppressive, anti-colonial and anti-racist frameworks, we will look at food justice and food security more broadly. Together we will focus on how peoples who are not Indigenous to turtle island can work towards good practices of allyship within a decolonizing food justice framework.

Bios:

Karolyn Givogue is an anarcha-Indigenous community organizer, identifying as a cis, two-spirited, mixed race kononkwe (Kenein’keha:ka/ Mohawk woman), of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, okwaho ni’wakenaronton (wolf clan), from Tsikaná:taien (Cornwall). Karolyn has been living in Nogojiwanong (Peterborough) since 2003, where she’s been organizing in anti-poverty, anti-racist, decolonizing, anti-violence, feminist, anarchist and trans liberation movements.

Amanda Lickers is a mixed onondowaga (seneca) haudenosaunee cis-woman belonging to the turtle clan. She positions herself against colonial-capitalism and is currently working to stop the line 9 reversal. Spending her time harvesting medicines, strategizing revolution, combating ecocide and hating the police, Amanda is involved in a culturally revitalizing Indigenous food sovereignty inititative with Ieierhes (Karolyn) and local Anishinaabek partners in hiawatha first nation.
